More than half the Peninsula frozen in the early hours of Friday: in these capitals it will reach -5 ºC
After the snow and rain, much of Spain will shiver with negative temperatures, especially during the early hours of Friday. There are already six communities on notice for low temperatures, and some more will probably be added.
In the next few hours, a dana and a low pressure system in the Mediterranean will bring abundant rainfall to the northeast and heavy snowfall in the Pyrenees, the Central System and parts of the Iberian Peninsula.
The episode will be brief, on Thursday afternoon the dana will have already been reabsorbed by the general circulation and the anticyclone will prevail on the surface. With the remnants of polar air, snowy surfaces and calm winds, minimum temperatures promise to be very low on Friday, with almost widespread frosts in the interior and locally intense frosts .
Intense cold during dawn on Friday: around -5 ºC is expected in these capitals
On Friday, minimum temperatures will be well below the average values for this time of year . They will be between 3 and 5 ºC above the usual values in much of the interior, northern third and the Balearic Islands . In mountain areas, the anomalies will be even greater, being in some areas up to 10 ºC lower than the average.
With this, first thing in the morning on Friday the thermometer will oscillate between 0 and -4 ºC in both Castilla, central zone , interior of all the Cantabrian communities, Navarra , La Rioja , Aragon , interior of Catalonia and the Valencian Community as well as in all mountain systems.
Frosts will be important in the Northern Plateau, Community of Madrid , La Rioja and mountainous points of Castilla-La Mancha, with values between -4 and -6 ºC. Some provincial capitals such as Teruel , Segovia , Ávila , Soria , León and Albacete could drop below -5ºC during the night from Thursday to Friday.
Up to -15 ºC in mountain areas
In the Pyrenees, the Iberian System, the Central System, the Béticas, Sierra Nevada and the Cantabrian Mountains, the combination of snowy ground, weak winds and low skies will lower the temperature even further. The minimum temperatures in these areas could range between -10 and -15 ºC. The AEMET has activated the yellow warning for minimum temperatures in the Pyrenees of Huesca, the Pyrenees of Lleida and Val d’Aran .
On the coast and south of the peninsula, temperatures will be higher, but it will still be cold. The thermometer will range from 0 to 6 ºC on the Mediterranean coast, rising to 10-12 ºC in the Strait and the Malaga coast . In the Canary Islands, minimum temperatures of 18 to 19 ºC are expected in coastal areas and frost in the high peaks of Tenerife, where they can drop to -2 ºC.
Weekend with less frost and temperatures of up to 25 ºC in the southeast
The night from Friday to Saturday will make us shiver again, with extensive frosts in both Castilla, the central area, La Rioja, Navarra, Aragon and the interior of all the Cantabrian communities, Catalonia and the Valencian Community. In these areas it will reach 0 to -4 ºC, with values lower than -10 ºC at high Pyrenean levels.
With this, the frosts will disappear from flat areas and will be restricted to localized points in the high mountains. On Sunday, the maximum temperature of 20 ºC will be exceeded in Andalusia, the Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community, with values of up to 25 ºC in the southeast. In the Canary Islands , 26 ºC will be reached or exceeded in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.
